Letting Go of Fear: An Important Part of Becoming an Entrepreneur
Estimated Read Time: 3 minutes
If I could sit down with my past self over coffee, I know exactly what I’d say.
Don’t be so afraid.
That’s the advice I’d give the woman who hesitated, who second-guessed, who felt the itch to do something bigger, but kept waiting for permission. The one who thought she needed more credentials, more experience, more signs. The one who assumed climbing the corporate ladder was where success was built. The one who was secretly jealous as she watched friends start successful businesses.
The Truth? I Needed to Trust Myself
Fear is a tricky thing. It doesn’t always show up as panic. It’s not always a racing pulse or a nauseous stomach. Sometimes it disguises itself as overthinking, as procrastination, or as boredom. Sometimes it looks like staying in a place we mistake for comfort, and going through the motions to spite being deeply unfulfilled. Sometimes it whispers things like “Who am I to do this?” or “What if I fail?”
But here’s what I’ve learned. If you want to build something that matters, something aligned with your values, your strengths, and the way you actually want to live, you’ll need to feel uncomfortable sometimes. Not because you’re doing it wrong or made a bad choice. But because you’re finally doing something brave. You chose to do something hard and pursue something 90% of people never will. That takes courage which is powerful.
Choosing Growth Over Fear
Starting your own business is a vulnerable decision. It’s also bold and can be one of the most liberating and fulfilling things you’ll ever do.
Just like building muscle in the gym or adopting a new habit, you have to put in the effort and the energy. And you have to do it consistently. Then “suddenly” it feels easier and what you were worrying about seems small and unimportant compared to how far you’ve come. I’ve learned that action, even small ones, will melt away fear and anxiety.
The modern world would have you believe that there’s all these overnight successes who made it big and are living a life of ease. All you are seeing is the highlight reel and snapshots of specific moments in time. You aren’t seeing the work, the mistakes, or the trial and error that led to their current circumstances. Sustainable success requires that you overcome at least a little bit of struggle. The human brain is wired for it.
There will be a moment when you realize you’re not waiting anymore. You’re not deferring your dreams to a boss, a job description, or someone else’s timeline. You’re raising your hand. You’re using your voice. You’re betting on yourself.
That Shift? That's When Everything Starts to Change
When you build your business from a place of clarity, capability, and connection, not hustle and hype, people notice. Nobody else has your brilliance or your perspective, so when you choose to focus on creating something that’s uniquely yours, instead of based on someone else’s prescribed check list, it’s going to be special. It also makes it that much easier to relate to your prospective customer when the business is authentically yours.
Because real, human-centered work stands out. Want proof?
- 86% of consumers say authenticity influences which brands they support (Stackla)
- 70% of emotionally connected customers are willing to spend more (Capgemini)
- 82% will walk away from brands they believe don’t care about them (Salesforce)
Connection matters, in business and in life. And when you lead with honesty, empathy, and purpose, your people will find you. This is true if you have a product you are selling or a service you offer. There is a lot of noise out there these days and to cut through it, to be noticed, requires a different approach than most are willing to take.
